The Central Valley from Redding to Bakersfield is a fog-making machine in the wintertime, especially after recent rains. Clear nights and calm winds are the perfect recipe for fog, leading to patchy areas of visibility below 200 feet. Vehicular accidents are quite common due to tule fog. The National Weather Service suggests that drivers slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase their following distance.
